San Antonio Expands Summer Swim Programs Across City Pools
City pools and community centers are expanding group swim sessions this summer to meet demand from families and adults seeking water-based exercise.
How we reported this
San Antonio Parks and Recreation opened registration this week for its summer aquatic sessions at multiple city pools, with more than 4,200 spots filled in the first three days.
The timing aligns with rising temperatures and a continued push for accessible group fitness after last year's heat-related health warnings from the Bexar County health district. Residents across neighborhoods are turning to water programs because they accommodate different ages and fitness levels without high-impact strain on joints.
Venues Offering Group Sessions
The Woodlawn Pool on Woodlawn Avenue runs daily lap swims for adults at 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., while the Palo Alto Pool on South New Braunfels Avenue hosts family learn-to-swim classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Both sites also schedule water aerobics for seniors three mornings each week through the end of August. The YMCA of Greater San Antonio at its Broadway facility adds evening parent-child swim nights on Wednesdays, open to members and day-pass holders.
These locations sit within a short drive of downtown and the South Side, giving residents on the near West Side and in the King William district multiple choices without crossing the loop.
Prices and Participation Numbers
A city eight-week group swim block costs $48 for adults and $32 for children, with discounts for Bexar County residents who show proof of address. Last summer the department recorded 11,800 total participants across all aquatic programs, a figure it expects to exceed this year based on current sign-ups. The YMCA charges $65 for a four-week session that includes access to its indoor pool on days when outdoor sites close for maintenance.
Residents can check availability and sign up through the city's Parks and Recreation website or by calling the Woodlawn and Palo Alto pool offices before July 20. Day passes remain available at both city pools for $3 on weekdays and $5 on weekends for those who want to test a single session first.
