San Antonio city council approved $18 million in capital improvements for sports venues during its July 9 meeting, directing funds toward structural repairs and equipment at three primary sites.
The allocation arrives as participation in organized youth and adult leagues has climbed 22 percent since 2023, according to Parks and Recreation Department records, pushing existing fields and courts past capacity during peak evening hours.
Work will begin at the Alamodome complex along Interstate 37, where contractors plan to replace the south-end turf and add LED lighting banks rated for 1,200 lux. Parallel projects target the Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium on the West Side, including new dugout drainage systems and a resurfaced warning track. The department also listed McAllister Park on the North Side for installation of four additional lighted soccer pitches, each measuring 105 by 68 meters.
These locations sit within established residential corridors, allowing residents from the Monte Vista and Dignowity Hill neighborhoods shorter travel times than trips to county facilities farther out on Loop 1604.
Department spreadsheets show the $18 million breaks down to $7.4 million for Alamodome turf and lighting, $5.9 million for Wolff Stadium drainage, and $4.7 million for McAllister Park fields, with all contracts scheduled for award by September 30 and substantial completion set for March 2027. The per-field cost at McAllister averages $1.175 million, matching bids accepted last year for similar work at Woodlawn Lake Park.
Residents can review the full project schedule and request field reservations through the city’s online Parks and Recreation portal starting next week.
